The Room as Event / Το Δωμάτιο ως Συμβάν
Temporal Assembly, Interior Space, and the Morphogenetic Acceptance of Form
event → perturbation → interaction → topology → form1.

Interior space is not a neutral container waiting to receive already completed forms. It is an active field in which form becomes legible through relations of time, position, repetition, intensity, orientation, and provisional stabilization. The room may therefore be understood not as passive enclosure, but as event: a spatial condition in which different intensities organize themselves until they become perceptible as form.
event → perturbation → interaction → topology → form1. From object to event
The conventional reading of interior space begins with objects: bed, table, lamp, wall, opening, colour, material. This reading is necessary, but insufficient. It does not explain when a room stops being a mere arrangement of objects and begins to operate as an experiential whole. To address this, emphasis must shift from the object to the relation, and from relation to the temporal articulation of relations.
Form does not appear simply because an object has an outline. It appears when a series of spatial and perceptual differences acquires rhythm, continuity, and recognizable intensity. A room is not only the place where things are located. It is the field in which things acquire weight, distance, hierarchy, and possible movement in relation to one another.
2. Temporal assembly and duration
Form cannot be exhausted by an isolated instant. A frame may register a state, but it cannot by itself explain the morphogenetic acceptance of form. The experience of form is composed through the succession and retention of many short-lived presents: impressions, small shifts, repetitions, pauses, and differences retained in memory and reassembled as intelligible continuity.
This is where Bergson’s notion of duration remains decisive. Duration is not an external succession of homogeneous units, but an internal continuity in which each moment carries the trace of previous moments and modifies the way subsequent moments are received. For design, this means that form is not merely a spatial arrangement; it is a temporal condensation. Form is what has had time to organize itself through variation.
Form does not precede experience as a finished object; it emerges when temporal variation reaches sufficient topological coherence to become perceptible as form.
3. The room as a field of discrete perturbations
In the visual study accompanying this essay, deviation is not treated as a dreamlike effect but as an installation condition. The orange fish are not read as magical bodies floating arbitrarily in space. They are read as discrete units of suspension, rhythm, and distribution: as positions within a field. Their scale, spacing, vertical suspension, and relation to the bed, light, furniture, and monochrome envelope of the room generate a temporary topology.
The realistic condition is essential. The room remains legible as a room: it has structure, depth, materiality, furniture, light, and scale. This is precisely why the perturbation gains force. If the space became entirely imaginary, deviation would lose its precision. An event requires a field of resistance. It requires a space stable enough for variation to become visible.
4. Morphogenetic acceptance of form
The aesthetic acceptance of form is not simple image recognition. It is not enough to say: “this is a room” or “these are objects.” Form becomes acceptable when the observer can follow an internal logic of relations. Gestalt psychology is useful as a starting point because it shows how perception organizes discrete elements into wholes through proximity, similarity, continuity, closure, and common fate. Yet here the organization is not only spatial. It is temporal as well.
The observer does not see only objects. The observer sees possible sequences. The observer sees distributions that can be read as flow, pause, density, deviation, or the promise of transformation. This is the point at which interior space becomes a morphogenetic field. It does not merely host forms; it participates in the production of their recognizability.
5. Assemblage, stabilization, destabilization
Assemblage theory, as developed by Manuel DeLanda, offers a precise language for this process. Entities need not be understood as closed essences, but as assemblages of heterogeneous elements with variable degrees of stabilization and destabilization. An interior is not only a collection of objects. It is an assemblage of material, luminous, expressive, functional, and temporal components.
When stabilization prevails, space becomes legible, inhabitable, and classifiable. When destabilization is introduced with precision, space does not dissolve; it becomes activated. Suspension, repetition, and serial distribution do not destroy form. They place form under the condition of event.
6. Conclusion: the interior as temporary topology
The question is not only what form is, but when something becomes form. Under what spatial and temporal conditions does an arrangement acquire sufficient coherence to become perceptible as form? Design as Event answers by shifting attention from the final object to the process by which its recognizability is produced.
The room as event is not a metaphor without consequences. It is a method of reading and designing: space is understood as a temporary topological articulation of intensities. Form is not simply placed inside space. It emerges when perturbation, interaction, and spatial organization reach a sufficient metastable coherence. This is where the contribution of design as event becomes clear: not in the production of an image, but in the understanding of the moment when a sequence becomes form.
