Organic surface as a material field of traces: line, density and repetition operate not as decoration, but as inscriptions of force.

8. Design as Event
Abstract
This essay examines motion not as the visual content of an already formed object, but as an active condition of material genesis, perceptual organisation and future transformation. A line, a cut, a fold, a fracture or a layer is not merely the spatial residue of an action that has passed. It is a condensation of duration, pressure, resistance, rhythm and decision.
The argument distinguishes four temporal regimes: the chronometric time of physical process, the operative time of gesture, the phenomenological time of perception, and the residual-prospective time of the trace. The fourth regime is decisive: the trace is not only the memory of an event. It is the material alteration through which the past continues to affect the future of form.
Keywords: motion, matter, trace, duration, gesture, morphogenesis, event, prospective force.
1. Form as the Persistence of Motion
Form is often understood as the stable outcome of a process that has already ended. Movement acts, the operation stops, and the object remains as a final state. This view is insufficient because it separates the result from the temporal and material conditions of its emergence.
Form is not simply what comes after motion. It is what motion has altered. A line is not merely located on a surface; it carries direction, pressure and the rhythmic decision of the hand. A fold is not only a spatial modification; it is the concentration of a force that has passed through matter and left it changed. A cut does not merely indicate that a tool has crossed a material; it retains the instant violence of contact and the resistance encountered there.
Olivier Debré’s proposition that painting is time becoming space can be read at this level. Time does not literally become extension. What enters space is the difference produced by a temporal act. Duration does not become an object. It becomes consequence.
2. Four Temporal Regimes of Morphogenesis
To avoid using “time” as a vague and general term, it is necessary to distinguish four temporal functions that intersect in every act of formation.
| Temporal regime | Function | Aesthetic significance |
|---|---|---|
| Chronometric time | Measures duration, velocity, interval, sequence. | It describes the physical execution of an act, but not its lived or morphogenetic intensity. |
| Operative time | Concerns the internal organisation of gesture: initiation, contact, resistance, correction, pause. | It shows that intention is not fully prior to action; it is clarified through contact with matter. |
| Phenomenological time | Constitutes perception as a field of retention and anticipation. | The eye does not add up points; it follows tensions, directions and possible continuities. |
| Residual-prospective time | The trace preserves a past transformation and alters future possibilities. | Form becomes an active carrier of consequence, not a passive remainder. |

3. From Duration to Trace
Bergson prevents us from reducing temporality to a succession of measurable units. Duration is not mere sequence. It is qualitative transformation, inner density, continuous differentiation. If gesture is understood only as measurable movement, its deepest force is lost: within its duration, body, material and intention are transformed together.
Husserl adds that perception does not function as an accumulation of isolated “nows.” Every present still carries what has just elapsed and opens toward what is anticipated. A line is therefore not perceived as a series of points, but as temporal tension. The eye follows, retains, expects, returns.
Form, in this sense, is not only in front of us. It has temporal depth. It carries an action that we no longer see, but whose consequences continue to organise perception.
4. The Trace Is Not a Dead Remainder
The ordinary notion of trace presents it as the sign of an absence. A footprint indicates a body that has passed. A cut indicates a tool that moved. Wear indicates a use that was repeated.
This reading is correct, but incomplete. A trace does not merely point to something no longer present. It modifies the field in which matter will continue to exist, resist, receive interventions and generate new relations.
A crack is not only evidence of fracture. It is a new organisation of fragility. A fold is not only the memory of force. It is a new line of behaviour in the surface. A layer of pigment is not only the trace of a brushstroke. It is a new optical and material condition for every layer that follows.
5. The Prospective Force of the Trace
The phrase “the trace predetermines” carries intensity, but it becomes dangerous if it is heard as determinism. A trace does not pre-decide the future. It does not contain a necessary outcome. It is not the fate of form.
The more precise formulation is: the prospective force of the trace. A trace predisposes; it does not predetermine. It redistributes possibilities without abolishing contingency. After the trace, certain movements become more likely, others more difficult. Certain directions gain priority, others lose immediacy. The field remains open, but it is no longer evenly open.
This proposition can be connected to Simondon: form is not imposed upon inert matter by an external schema. It emerges within a metastable field of potentials, tensions and resolutions. Each individuation does not exhaust the field. It leaves remainders, new tensions and new possibilities of transformation.
It can also be connected to Gibson: an environment is not merely a set of visible properties, but a field of possibilities for action. If a trace changes surface, grip, resistance or direction, it also changes what the field allows, encourages or obstructs.
6. Matter as an Active Field
Merleau-Ponty allows us to understand that perception is not detached observation. The body perceives because it can move, touch, test and relate. Form is not received only as image; it is received as possibility of posture, passage, handling, proximity or distance.
Ingold and Malafouris strengthen this line of thought: making is not the simple transfer of an internal idea into external matter. It is a process of mutual formation. The maker does not work upon dead material. The maker works with materials that resist, respond, delay, redirect and transform intention itself.
Matter, therefore, is not substrate. It is interlocutor. Not because it possesses consciousness, but because it has behaviour, history, resistance and transformative capacity.
7. Aesthetic Value as Temporal Density
The aesthetic value of motion in matter is not found merely in the visibility of gesture. Visible gesture can become easy expressionism. The display of process can become mannerism. Conversely, an overly smooth and sterilised form can erase every sense of genesis.
A powerful form does not merely reveal how it was made. It keeps active the tension between what has happened and what remains possible. It has stabilised without becoming inert. It has acquired limit without losing the trace of the transformation that produced it.
Aesthetic value may therefore be understood as the capacity of a form to carry its history not as decoration, not as narration, but as an active structure of perception and possibility.
8. Design as Event
Within Design as Event, form is not treated as a static product. It is a state that has emerged from events and will itself become the condition for further events.
State carries continuity. Event introduces difference. Trace preserves transformation and redistributes the future of form.
This means that design does not merely produce objects. It produces temporal consequences. Every form organises ways of seeing, using, moving, remembering, touching and transforming. The work does not end where its construction is completed. It continues in the resistances, uses and interpretations it makes possible.
State carries continuity; event introduces difference; trace preserves transformation and redistributes the field of what comes next.
Conclusion
Motion does not disappear when it stops moving. It persists in the differences it has installed. Form is the place of that persistence.
The trace is the material threshold between the past and the future of form. It faces backward because it carries an action that has ended. It faces forward because it changes the field in which the next event may occur.
This double temporal orientation gives matter a prospective force. Not fatalistic, not deterministic, but real: after every event, matter is never neutral again.
When aesthetically powerful, form does not freeze its past. It converts it into tension. It does not close the event. It delivers it into duration.
Form is the event when it has acquired material memory and future pressure.
